We can’t wait to meet you Kelowna!

KELOWNA BARISTAS THAT HAVE COME FULL CIRCLE

It’s summer, 1995, and baristas Derek Brock and Jason Cunningham have met for the first time, becoming friends and coworkers at the first Starbucks Coffee in the Okanagan, at Orchard Park Mall. Back then, today’s Seattle-based coffee giant was a relatively small company, but was opening 5 stores per day across North America. For Derek and Jason, as young baristas, it was like getting paid to go to “coffee school”, with a respected, fast-moving company. They both opened and managed several Starbucks stores throughout the Okanagan, including Mission Park, Willow Park, Cherry Lane in Penticton, and Village Green in Vernon. Derek went on to Vancouver to manage the Seabus Starbucks, which was the first Starbucks in Canada in 1987, while Jason stayed in Kelowna.

After three years of learning the ropes with the Seattle coffee chain, Derek and Jason decided to venture out on their own, creating the first ever Jugo Juice location in 1998, reinventing the smoothie and juice bar experience, that eventually grew to 138 stores across Canada. The early years as baristas had taught them well, and a public company purchased the Jugo Juice chain in 2011. The coffee and “foodie” dreams of Derek and Jason did not end there though.

Fast forward over 25 years from when the “baristas-turned-business-partners” first met in Kelowna, and their company and team has come full circle. In fall 2021, Deville Coffee will open on the corner of Bernard Ave and Pandosy Street, kitty-corner from Lululemon. Ironically, the Deville Coffee location was previously a Starbucks.

To the team at Deville Coffee, this opening is much more than a new coffee shop. It is a story of coming full circle…

  • It feels rewarding to circle back to your roots – setting up shop and giving back to the neighbourhood and community you love.

  • It’s a story of working hard with passion and commitment, not knowing the rewards may come decades later – from employees to business owners.

  • It is a return to local – from a global coffee giant, to a local coffee company, introduced by home-town baristas. A business that is locally owned and operated.

We can’t wait to meet you Kelowna!

Jenna and her team of talented staff look forward to meeting you, and serving you a great cup of coffee, in a great room, in a great building, in a great city.
